Urban Farming and Environmental Action Student Summit at Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Center
Horticulture students from several MCPS high schools will attend an all day summit on Monday, September 24th at the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Center. 5110 Meadowside Lane Rockville, MD 20855.
Invited schools are: Sherwood High School, Clarksburg High School, Northwood High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.
Speakers will talk about what they are doing in the fields of sustainable farming techniques, ecology and urban farming.
The summit partners include: Audubon Naturalist Society GreenKids Program, Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and the MCPS Outdoor and Environmental Education Program.
Speakers include: Jessica Weiss of Growing Soul, Robert True of Blueberry Farms, Patrick Detzner of Silver Spring YMCA Garden, Sophia Maravell of Brickyard Educational Farm.
Schedule:
9:30 am Bus pickup at schools
10:00 am Arrive Smith Center
10:00 am to 11:00 Rotation of two speakers. (half hour each)
11:00 am to 11:30 am LUNCH (provided) Possible opportunity for students to talk with other representatives from Urban Farming and Environmental Organizations.
11:30 am to 12:15 pm -- outdoor activity
12:15 pm to 1:00 pm -- outdoor activity
Possible outdoor activities are: gardens at the Smith Center, stream/forest evaluation.
