5 Things to Know Today: Independence Day, 2012

Happy Fourth of July! Here are some things to know on the nation's birthday.

Good morning, Chevy Chase! It's Wednesday, July 4, and here are five things to know today:

1.) Temperatures will be in the mid- to high 90s, with a 40 percent chance of rain and a humidity index of 51 percent, according to Weather.comClean Air Partners projects that the Air Quality Index will be 101, which is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

2.) Many municipalities in Chevy Chase are holding parades and block parties today. Check this link for the time and location of your neighborhood's own party and parade. Photographs from the Chevy Chase Historical Society give us a look back at parades of the past.

3.) Montgomery County's fireworks have been canceled, but there's always Takoma Park's fireworks display and—if you're up for Metro or a trip down Wisconsin Avenue—the national display.

4.) If you get a call from Pepco telling you that your power is back on, but you're still sitting in the dark at home, call Pepco back to let them know. There could be something wrong with your property's connection to the neighborhood's line.

5.) Today in history: One hundred and eighty-six years ago (in 1826), Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died. Read more on History.com.
