Update: 15-Year-Old Boy Found Dead in Freak Accident on Chevy Chase Trail

Joshua Davis had been reported missing Monday.

Update; 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 11: 

A falling tree struck and killed a teenage boy riding a bicycle Monday on a side path off Rock Creek Trail in the 9200 block of Jones Mill Road in Chevy Chase, Montgomery County police said.

The body of Joshua Davis, 15, of Chevy Chase was discovered Tuesday afternoon, according to a police news release.

Davis' parents reported him missing Monday night, after he did not return home from a bike ride. Search efforts on Monday were unsuccessful, police said.

Severe storms swept through the area Monday afternoon and evening. Investigators say the storms may have been a factor in Davis' death.

"[We] are deeply saddened by last night’s tragic accident in Rock Creek Park Stream Valley No. 2 claiming the life of a young boy riding his bicycle in the park," Montgomery County Department of Parks Director Mary Bradford said in a statement. "Our thoughts and sympathy go out to his family and friends. Our park police officers are continuing to work closely with the county police to investigate this very sad incident."

Original post; 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 11: A body, believed to be of a 15- to 16-year-old boy, was found in the woods on a trail near the intersection of Jones Mill Road and Susanna Lane in Chevy Chase on Tuesday afternoon, Montgomery County police said.

Police were called to the scene around 1:15 p.m. by the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, which called police for assistance with an injured person, Officer Janelle Smith, a Montgomery County Police Department spokesperson, told Patch.

No foul play is suspected in the death, which may have been accidental, Smith said. 

As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, no information was available about the identity or how long the body had been in the woods. Police did not say on which trail the body had been found.
