Oh I am so very sorry and saddened by this update! Disheartening!

Why did the dog go missing after just being adopted? Seems like the journalist wasn't familiar with dogs, which makes me wonder why the rescue gave her the dog in the first place? A dog that comes into a new home needs to be tied to a family member with a leash and appropriate collar for the first week (at least). Seems like all involved didn't do their homework and another life is sadly lost - which could have been avoided.

This is sad..Rescue dogs are easily spooked and are known to bolt for no good reason. So Adopters do need to be extra careful with doors, fences etc. My Pyranees rescue Bella tried to bolt every time I left the house for the 1st 3 weeks she was with me until she truly knew she was staying for good and she was safe. Extra vigilence is needed with rescues until you have experience with what they may try to do--like dig, leap or chew their way out of crates, fences, bedrooms, garages etc.

So sorry for Katie and also Cokie and her family..

We live in this neighborhood and have been looking out for any sign of the dog. Very sad it ended this way.

I agree dog lover. Total irresponsibility on the adoptive parents. Katie did not deserve this. All newly adopted dogs should be kept on a leash. There should never be a situation where they can get outside. Simple stupid carelessness.

We live in the same neighborhood and my kids put food on the front porch for Katie (they've done it for other lost dogs). We have a dog too who gets out (rarely) but it happens. With all the planning things happen, they're called accidents. EVERYTHING was done to try and find her (not an accident). It's tragic for all.

They say that if you want a friend in Washington politics, get a dog. Dear Ms. Roberts------looks like you didn't really want a friend bad enough to take proper care. I don't have any sympathy for you but I am very sorry for the dog. I guess if a dog wants a friend in Washington, they should aim for someone other than a liberal "journalist."

I am sure Ms. Roberts is very sad that her dog died in such a tragic way. Shame on you, Sammi (and any other people out there so quick to blame her) for sending such a cruel message. Life happens -- and we don't need heartless people to make us feel worse. Want I want to know is whether the driver of the car stopped when the accident occured. If mean people want to vent -- why not choose the driver! I have seen many reckless drivers in the Bethesda area who deserve your harsh remarks -- not Ms. Roberts.

Sammi, what does being a liberal have anything to do with this. I guess you think a conservative would have never let this happen. Keep your effen politics out of this situation. Here is something you should remember - a liberal treats dogs like people, and a conservative treats people like dogs.

To all of you people that come on these message boards to "pontificate" as if you know what you are talking about...BOTTOM LINE, you get a dog, you learn how to train it. When I got my first dog, I took a class at the Rockville Animal Shelter which taught me how to train the dog. Very simple process. But then again, when it comes to some (as Sammi put it) liberal journalist, 2 things going against her (a lib and journalist) and you are talking about someone who is not that bright. Bottom line, animal shelters should make it mandatory for thise wanting to adopt to take training on how to care for a pet.

I hope she doesn't adopt another dog any time soon. If you are gong to get an animal know how to take care of it!! I hope Katie didn't lay there and suffer. I also know there is someone who has no respect for a life, when this dog was hit the driver should have stopped and taken the dog to the vet themselves or called the police for help....such a sad story for a dog that just wanted a loving home.

WOW!!! Everyone is sooo quick to judge. It really is not our place to judge anyone. We have NOOO idea what really happened. We adopted 2 dogs (years ago) & signed up for Dog obedience classes & our dogs were leashed, when one of them slipped out of their collar & leash & ran straight into our neighbor's car. Fortunately she was relatively fine ( a little limp for a couple of days)...Anyhow...perhaps we could reach out to those out of power or something else positive instead of slamming everyone? Just a thought...

if you hit someones dog.you should meet with that person and apologize in person not through the police or a messageby a third party.
