Police Nab Man in Crofton in Potential Mass Shooting Plot

Police say suspect wore T-shirt that read, "Guns don't kill people, I do."

Police in Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties took a man into custody early Friday in connection with what authorities say could have been a mass shooting plot. The man reportedly made threats against his employer, and police found a cache of weapons at a residence in Crofton.

Maj. Edward Bergen of the Anne Arundel County Police Department confirmed during a press conference Friday that the man was taken into custody in Crofton.

Bergen said a SWAT team raided the man's home at the 1600 block of Parkridge Circle, where the Keswick Park Apartments are located.

Police said the man wore a T-shirt that read: "Guns don't kill people, I do."

In apparent reference to the shooting a week ago in Aurora, CO, the man allegedly said at one point prior to being taken into custody, "I'm a joker, and I'm going to load my guns and blow everyone up."

Police recovered 25 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, semi-automatic rifles and pistols. Police said the man did not have a concealed weapons permit.

"We think a violent episode was avoided," Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw told reporters.

Police have not released the man's name nor had he been charged as of Friday afternoon. Police issued a court order for a mental evaluation of the man and a search warrant for his address.

"The individual surrendered to us" without incident, said Bergen, and was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

The man was reportedly facing termination from his job at Pitney Bowes in Prince George's County. Carol Wallace, a spokesperson for Pitney Bowes, said the man was an employee of a subcontractor of the company.

"He has not been on any Pitney Bowes property in more than four months," she said.

The arrest comes one week after a gunman killed 12 people and injured 58 during a screening of the Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, in Aurora, CO. The Batman series features a villain called the Joker.

Police arrested the sole suspect, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, in the parking lot of the theater.

Earlier information below:

WJLA reported that authorities found an "arsenal" of weapons and that the man had made threats toward his employer.

Some 25 firearms were recovered from his home, reported WUSA9News Now reporter Andrea McCarren. The firearms reportedly included semi-automatic rifles and handguns as well as ammunition.

WUSA reported the suspect called a former co-worker with threats to shoot his boss and workers. The co-worker reportedly called police.

A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Prince George's County police headquarters. Anne Arundel County police had no comment on the reports but did confirm spokesman Justin Mulcahy will be at the press conference with Prince George's County police.

How do they know what he was GOING to do? Just because a guy is getting ready to lose his job and has guns doesn't mean he is going to do a mass shooting!

They don't know what he was going to do, but they know what he threatened to do. If he threatened you, would you prefer to wait until after he's killed you--or did you maybe not bother to read the article?

Watch the press conference TLC. Wouldn't want to have that tip, not act, and be wrong. Lots of people have lots of guns and face hard times... They don't all get arrested.

Something does not sound right here, maybe the press conference will clear it up, not sure the weapons are even a issue, but in the world we live in now, it almost makes sense to make sure nothing crazy happens like Colorado

So I read the "mass shooting plot" article. The news media once again has blown this out of proportion. His beef was with his employer and yet according to the news media he was going to go on a massive shooting. Yes, that mole hill became a mountain.

His beef may have been with his employer, but that doesn't rule out him walking into Pitney Bowles and emptying several of those guns into his former coworkers.

He made a threat, and had the means to carry it out. End of story.

I'm sure if there had been a warning about Holmes before his rampage in Colorado some NRA member would have accused the media of blowing it out of proportion--

Sounds like the subject made a threat, not planning some massive rampage. If I was in the media I too would gift wrap stories to give them shock effect. The media is GRASPING for anything gun related, to keep the buzz going. Keep the large amount of comments and web traffic pouring in.

If the subject has means motive and opportunity-- I say check it out-- better safe than sorry. Who would be so stupid as to wear a t-shirt saying "Guns don't kill people, I do"??

Well, if his former colleague was concerned enough to call the police, that's enough reason to check him out. Good call.

He made a threat. Bottom line. Kudos to the concerned, THREATENED employees at Pitney, and kudos to PG and AA police! If something HAD happened - would you say a mountain out of a mole hill? I guess we will never know since he has been found out! Thank GOD. He's rocking a shirt that says "Guns don't kill people, I do", with an arsenal and a threat, it's enough for me. Thanks!

If the guy was in fact going to try and commit mass murder, it's great that the police caught him in time. However, the story as reported on WJLA looked like a cheesy attempt to tie this area into a big national story like the Aurora shootings; headlines regarding this incident have read "copycat" slayings, "suspect in mass killings arrested," etc. First of all, he didn't commit a mass killing, second of all, until more information is learned, how can they say what he was planning to do would be a "copycat" of what happened in Colorado? Again, I'm glad the police caught up to this guy, but the news media needs to get its facts straight before reporting a story, esp. something like this.

If that is, in fact, the case, the police will now determine that. He has not comitted a crime, only threats. However, thankfully, it is in the hands of the police now.

Did you read the search warrant? He said "I'm the joker, I'm gonna to load my guns and blow everybody up". I mean, if he has 25 firearms and 400 rounds of ammunition and makes a verbal threat - I'll take proactive measures versus being reactive with 12 people murdered.

Let's not turn this into a "defend the second amendment at all costs" argument. No one is trying to take away your guns, TLC. What did happen is a guy who's got a boat-load of guns and ammo, a grudge, and an "I kill people" tee-shirt made a threat. And the AA cops were smart enough to stop a problem before it happened. How many lives were saved today?

Everyone has a beef and everyone wears a shirt that offends someone in today's world. It was a threat and that is all it was. Don't link this to the mass shooting in CO!!! DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO COMPARE!!!!

TLC, I made no link to the mass shooting in Colorado. That link was made by Mr. Trescott when he made the threat to his co-worker. "I'm the joker, I'm gonna to load my guns and blow everybody up."

This is enough for the police to go on, and the media is simply reporting the arrest. We'll have to see if there was anything in Trescott's apartment that indicates that he truly planned to carry this out. But until then, I'm happier that the weapons that he might have used to kill a bunch of innocent people are seized until this is straightened out.

Read the warrant. Nice people don't talk about splattering their bosses' brains on the sidewalk. How would you feel if he shot up the place, or shot up the Kmart behind his apartment?

Two people with loads of guns and ammo, claiming to be the joker and kill someone. Sounds like they should be linked to me.

Thank God the police were able to get to him first so it didn't have a chance to compare to what happened in CO.

Some of these comments seem to indicate that it would have been better for the guy to carry out his threat rather than prevent it. They also missed that part that said he was gonna load his guns and blow everybody up. That kind of a threat is good enough for me. Well done, law enforcement.

Some people ought to watch what they say. Had this individual actually taken violent action it could have been devistating. (Not to say that he was going to) And if the police hadn't acted & something did happen, some of the same people would instead be complaining that the authorities were asleep on their feet. How about saying "job well done" instead of perching yourself on a soapbox?!

This is so stupid... this reminds me of the paranoia immediately following 9/11, when every small town thought their water tower would be the next symbol of national security that would terrorists would target. When I saw the headline, I was expecting an investigation where they discovered loads of detailed plans, not an off the-cuff remark.

What happened to "Innocent until proven guilty"? Only under a fascist police state does this guy deserve to be in jail.

Thank Goodness he was stopped by police and the key hear is someone stood up after hearing him make a comment and called the police who acted quickly to prevent a possible killing. That is the difference between this case and any mass killing that has occurred. Someone took the threat as real and made that call before the nut job acted. Now lets stop playing the what ifs hear. Great job to all the police officers involved.

No mass shooter has ever made telephone calls to his victim(s) ahead of time. Did Kliebold and Harris call the high school ahead of time and tell them that they were coming? Did that crazy Korean at VT call ahead of time and say he was going to shoot 32 people? The answer is no. This is just a big blowhard with a gun collection.

Safety first

9:19 am on Saturday, July 28, 2012

Maybe so. Thanks to the person who called the police and the police themselves we thank goodness will never know what would have and could have happened. In all most every case we hear or read about there is someone after the fact that says he was really acting strange we wish we had called someone or my son pulled himself away from family and friends if only we knew. These are the people who could have said something and maybe like this case shows stopped a tragedy. All it takes is a phone call out of concern to save many lives. And yes it was a big gun collection.

The police did not "nab" the man. He made a phone call that alerted people to call the police. The PATCH yet again has sloppy reporting.

I also saw the search warrant, it said the employer had called him and he started to threaten him over the phone. 10-15 minutes after the employer called him he called the employer back and threatened him yet again. This is only my opinion, but i think after the second round of threats the person started to believe he was in some danger and called police. Again, as stated here by others, he is still innocent until proven guilty.
