The Friendship Heights storefront—empty for many months—will soon be occupied by the discount shoe store.

After many months of waiting, we have an answer to the question of what will replace the Borders bookstore.

Bargain-hunting shoe lovers rejoice: DSW is coming to the neighborhood.

The Friendship Heights storefront (at 5333 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC) has been closed for about a year, save for a few months last autumn, when a temporary Halloween costume store moved in, followed by the temporary lease of the space by neighboring high-end furniture store Roche Bobois for its overflow holiday stock.

Last week, a small but not insignificant sign appeared in the papered-over window, announcing DSW's imminent arrival.

Yayyy! I guess it is good news. It is better to have a shoe store in there than an empty space waiting for another Mexican or McD restaurant to open.

I think DSW is planning three new stores in DC---one at the former Borders in Friendship Heights, another in Columbia Heights and a third downtown on Connecticut Ave.
