Family Fun this Weekend in Montgomery County

Here are some fun things to do around town with the family this weekend.

 

Baseball Game: Southern MD Nationals @ Bethesda Big Train

    Where/When: Shirley Povich Field (10600 Westlake Dr., Bethesda). Friday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m.

    Why go: Watch the Bethesda Big Train, the No. 1 Summer Collegiate Baseball team in the nation! The Big Train is coming off its third consecutive Cal Ripken League Championship. Exciting baseball and family-friendly entertainment for the entire family!

    Price: $3 to $7.

     

    Visualizing the Eyes

    Where/When:  National Museum of Health and Medicine (2500 Linden Ln., Silver Spring). Friday, July 20, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

    Why go: Your body is an amazing work of art! Each month, the National Museum of Health and Medicine will focus on a different organ. In July, learn about how your eyes function and about diseases that affect the eyes. Explore anatomy, medical imaging techniques used to examine the eyes and pathology. After a brief lesson, attendees will create their own visual representation of the eyes. Open to the public. Recommended for students in grades three through eight. Reservations required; limited to 20. For reservations, call 301-319-3325. All participants will receive a wearable button featuring the Organ of the Month after each program. Attend each program and collect them all!

    Soul of Summer, featuring Jonathan Butler, Warren Hill and Maysa

    Where/When: Strathmore Music Center (5301 Tuckerman Ln., North Bethesda). Friday, July 20, at 8 p.m.

    Why go: The best of the legendary Smooth Jazz Cruise stars, together on stage at Strathmore! Baltimore-born-and-raised soul singer extraordinaire Maysa has a passionate following here, and no wonder: her contralto is sensuously joyful (Kickmag.com). South African guitarist and singer Jonathan Butler exploded onto the American music scene in 1987, opening for Whitney Houston. Since then, this masterful musician has grooved new ground in R&B, jazz and soul with his soaring vocals and masterful guitar style (AllAboutJazz.com). Canadian saxophonist Warren Hill has topped the Smooth Jazz, Adult Contemporary and Top 40 charts.

    Price: $30 to $68.

     

    The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

    Where/When:  Imagination Stage (4908 Auburn Ave., Bethesda). July 19 through 29 at various times. See website for times.

    Why go: The story of how Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter discover the fantastical world of Narnia is told through a dazzling fusion of dance, acting and singing. In Narnia, the four become embroiled in an epic battle between good and evil. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

    Price: $10 to $22.

     

    Cabin John Trail Hike

    Where/When: Cabin John Park (7701 Tuckerman Ln., Cabin John). Friday, July 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

    Why go: Hike 2.6 miles and look for wildlife. Ages 18 and up. For more information, call 301-765-8660.

    Price: Free.

     

    Sidewalk Sale

    Where/When: Bethesda Row boutiques, Friday through Sunday, July 20 through 22.

    Why go: Check out sales from: Amethyst, Capital Teas, City Sports, Equinox, Ginger, Jaleo, J. McLaughlin, Le Creuset, Luna, MyEyeDr., Pink Palm, Pirjo, Sassanova, Secolari, Urban Chic, Urban Country, Vapiano and Wear it Well.

    Family Fun Night: Circus Celebration

    Where/When: Concert Pavilion (31 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg). Friday, July 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

    Why go: Bring the whole family out for Friday night fun. This Friday features a Circus Celebration!

    Price: Free.

     

    Junior Detective Day at Kentlands Mansion

    Where/When: Kentlands Mansion (320 Kent Square Rd., Gaithersburg). Sunday, July 22, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

    Why go: Attention Junior Detectives: Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to participate in training sessions to receive your Junior Detective Badge. Put your skills to the test when you visit a variety of stations located on the grounds of Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg on Sunday, July 22.

    Gaithersburg police officers will be on hand to help participants make identification badges and get fingerprinted, to learn about neighborhood safety, to witness K9 demonstrations, and to explore an actual police car and motorcycle to see all the high-tech equipment police officers use. After completing all training sessions, new recruits will be sworn in as “Junior Detectives” by Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka.

    Admission is $10 per person. This program is best suited for children 5 to 12 years old, and parental guidance is required. Reservations are required, and may be made with cash, check, Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card.

    Price: $10 per person.
