File this one under “Katie fever.”
Bethesda’s BGR will re-name its “Gold Standard” french fries in honor of Katie Ledecky, our hometown swimming phenom who took home the gold medal in the women’s 800m race in London last week.
Ledecky made a splash on the international scene with her stunning Olympic win, and the rising Stone Ridge sophomore’s fan base has been steadily growing at home and abroad.
The fries, dubbed “Katie Gold Standard,” will be on sale from Aug. 13 through the end of the month.
So, maybe french fries aren’t as cool a namesake as adorable baby cheetahs at the National Zoo. But the proceeds will go to a great cause – the USA Swimming Foundation, the philanthropic arm of USA Swimming that encourages kids across the country to get involved with the sport.
BGR in Sterling, VA, also is honoring local Matt McLean, who was part of a U.S. freestyle relay team that took the gold in London, with “Matt Gold Standard Fries.”
“My family has watched all of the Olympic swimming together, and in fact our youngest, 9-year-old Hannah, is a swimmer herself,” said BGR owner Mark Bucher in a news announcement. “She thought it would be pretty cool to use BGR's Gold Standard to honor a couple of our local Olympians - and I could certainly find no reason to argue with her! What better way to do this, with the proceeds going to help other youngsters learn to swim.”
BGR’s “Gold Standard” fries, made from Yukon gold potatoes, are one of the restaurant’s most popular menu items.
