Get Out: Ideas for the Weekend

Check out our picks for fun things to do in Bethesda this weekend.

1. FREE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

Where/When: 6-8p.m. Thursday evenings in Veteran’s Park at the corner of Woodmont and Norfolk avenues

Why Go: What better way to enjoy the gorgeous spring weather than by taking in an outdoor concert with friends and family? The event series kicks off May 5 with the Janine Wilson band. It’s family- and budget-friendly, too.

Pricing: Free

2. BETHESDA FRESHFARM MARKET OPENING DAY

Where/When: 9a.m. to 1p.m. Saturdays, May 7-Oct. 29, on Norfolk Avenue between Fairmont and St. Elmo avenues

Why Go:  Nothing says spring like the first day of a farmers market. Bethesda is lucky enough to have three – the Bethesda Central Farm Market has already opened for the season and the Montgomery Farm Women’s Cooperative Market is year-round, but with the opening of the FRESHFARM market on Norfolk Avenue, all three markets are officially in business for the season. Stop by to pick up fresh, local fruits and veggies, breads, flowers, meats, cheeses and more.

Pricing: Market is free; product pricing varies.

3.  NILS LOFGREN ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE

Where/When: 8p.m. May 5 at the Music Center at Strathmore

Why Go: Don’t miss this intimate acoustic performance by Nils Lofgren, longtime guitarist with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

Pricing: Visit Strathmore’s website for ticket picing.

4. SPRING FIESTA

Where/When: 6-10p.m. May 7 at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation

Why Go: This event will feature food, live music, dancing, a silent auction and ethnic craft sales. Proceeds benefit scholarship funds for students in El Salvador, and the congregation will also recognize their 2011 Humanitarian Award recipient.

Pricing: Adult, $35; Youth, $15; Child, $10; Patron, $100.

5. LAUGH RIOT AT THE HYATT

Where/When: 8-10p.m. May 7 at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda

Why Go: This is a fun weekly event that highlights local comics. Tell your own jokes during a non-comic contest after the show, and you just might win a $25 prize.

Pricing: $10
