Just Cakes Closes Bethesda Storefront

The bakery, which has been open on Rugby Avenue since 2003, will continue to sell online.

Bethesda favorite Just Cakes has announced that it has closed its Rugby Avenue storefront. The shop will continue selling its baked goods online.

Its last day in Bethesda was Sunday, March 17.

The news was first reported by Bethesda blogger Robert Dyer.

The bakery will continue selling cookies, bars, breads and coffee for home delivery from the online store at www.justcakes.com, according to an online announcement.

"It has been a wonderful opportunity to serve our customers in Bethesda, and the DC area as our community bakery, along with its littlest customers, have grown since our opening in 2003," reads an online posting. "We will always remember the many happy faces of our friends that have enjoyed our tasty offerings, birthday parties, cooking classes and summer camps. And of course, the wonderful chefs and interns we have trained to make it happen."

No word yet on why the storefront is closing. Patch has reached out to Just Cakes for more information and we'll keep you updated.

I believe that their building and the one next door, was sold to make way for condos

More condos? WTF? Aren't there already tons of unused condos stretching from NIH to Tenleytown?

Maybe I'm missing something.

"[U]nused condos"? Yes, you're missing something.

@jag: I've been seeing a lot of condo buildings going up lately, and many of them look either unsold, or very slow to sell. If I'm wrong, then great, neighborhoods change, and that's fine. I just hate seeing all the fun local business die and then nothing replace it.

The Darcy is the only condo building under construction in the last 4 years and a large chunk of the units were pre-sold before the shovels even hit the ground (for $1200 per sqft, nevertheless). there's a huge amount of pent up demand.

Born and raised in this area and what they have done to Bethesda is a crime. It's totally ruined....gross high rise buildings everywhere you turn. Too bad.

I just realized, and this is NOT a complaint, but when the McD's closed, everyone came out of the woodwork and made fat jokes. When a cake shop closes, hardly any comments in comparison.

Just sayin'.
