Leggett: Bus Rapid Transit Too Expensive for County

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett says the county cannot afford to build a 10-route bus rapid transit system.

The bus rapid transit system proposed by Montgomery County planners for major county routes received a blow on Monday: Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett said the system would be too expensive to build, The (Washington) Examiner reported.

"Instead, Leggett suggested a significantly smaller system with fewer bells and whistles than the proposed high-end bus rapid transit, or BRT, system," The Examiner added.

The planners' proposal was for a 10-route system, which would have cost less than the 23-route bus rapid transit system proposed by the all-volunteer Transit Task Force last spring. The task force put its system's price tag at $1.8 billion, while Montgomery County Master Planner Larry Cole figured the 23-route system would have cost closer to $8 or $10 billion, The Examiner reported.

But the county can afford neither a 23-route nor a 10-route system, Leggett said, The Examiner wrote. To build even a smaller-scale system, Leggett "would pay for those routes by delaying other county construction projects and reallocating the money, though he wouldn't say which projects he would delay," The Examiner added.

Also, Leggett said that taxes might need to be raised to pay for the bus system, The Examiner reported.

What do you think? Can the county afford a bus rapid transit system? Would it be useful? Tell us in the comments.

Ah, Legget, the one person that I've found to be utterly out of touch with his constituents. He makes Congress look like hard working individuals, he makes the most corrupt Politician look honest, and he makes the richest look like they're saints.

Leggett probably will never and has never taken a bus in his life, he has no idea of the implications for raising taxes even more, and he could care less about the poor or the Montgomery County budget.

The only thing Leggett cares about is himself and protecting his friend's projects, any projects that can get him a kickback, and raising taxes on hardworking Montgomery County Residents.
He's a typical lawyer, Politician, and out of touch rich guy who thinks the bus systems are fine and he doesn't realize the implications he's creating by NOT doing a rapid bus system.

A rapid bus system mobilizes the work force, saves people time, and creates wealth and directly affects the economy by allowing people to get to and from work more efficiently.

Raising taxes isn't necessary because the project will pay for itself by creating wealth for the county, by raising the number of shoppers, by increasing tax revenue by increasing spending IN Montgomery County.

I'm beginning to think MC Politicians don't care about MC, they only care about lining their own pockets and increasing taxes while denying services, thereby driving business and taxes AWAY from MC!

can't the system be paid for by all that money we're supposed to rake in from the additional gambling casino?......Ooops, unless we were lied to, and there will be no more $$$$$

Michael, can you cite any facts to support your bold assertions? Do you have access to a transit study? Can you refer to a single allegation of corruption by a reputable journalist that impugns Executive Leggett? Do you even know what rich means? Ike is by no means rich, unless he's been squirreling away ill gotten gains that I know nothing about.

Julie - The extra money, if any, will go to the state. The county delegation would then have to go to Annapolis and get some of it budgeted to this project, which Councilman Berliner loves, but will cost a fortune. When I see busses in the county, there often appears to be a TON of capacity. I am not yet convinced that this system will get people out of their cars. Even if it did, it would only reduce traffic congestion, in which case other people would move to MoCo or start driving. Why not spend the money to lower Metro fares within the county or to or from the county?

If Bus Rapid Transit is too expensive, why are people even thinking about rail transit projects that are easily 100 times the expense of Bus Rapid Transit? There is a real disconnect with the reality of the costs.

In May of this year I heard the County executive speak with cautious enthusiasm about the BRT to the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board. He only half-jokingly referred to it as 'VRT" -Vehicle Rapid Transit - with a nod to the stigma that many place on a bus system. Ike called BRT/VRT "the most viable way to grow and meet the needs of a larger Montgomery County - with growth needed for the tax revenue". It is safe to say that the County Executive is a big fan of BRT- but also a realist about costs. The headline of this story is misleading. The story itself notes that Ike is only looking for a realistic and affordable VRT.
Sara- I agree that the much promoted Light Rail is a non-starter. BRT could have been in place and providing relief now if not for the Purple Distraction.
Mark G- I'm all for lowering costs on Metro. That expense would be a sure way to increase ridership and reduce drivers.
