Metrorail News: Red Line Weekend Track Work
Buses replace trains between Grosvenor and Friendship Heights this weekend.
Buses will replace Red Line trains between the Grosvenor and Friendship Heights Metrorail stations this weekend—between 10 p.m. on Friday and closing on Sunday, according to Metro's website.
The track closure will "allow for rail renewal/replacement, structural repairs, tunnel leak mitigation and related improvements," Metro reported.
The Medical Center and Bethesda stations will be closed, and Red Line trains will operate in two segments: between Shady Grove and Grosvenor, and between Friendship Heights and Glenmont.
"On each segment, trains will operate every 10 minutes between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and at regular weekend intervals at other times. Customers traveling through the work zone should allow about 30 minutes of additional travel time," Metro added.
The situation will repeat next weekend (July 27 through 29) and the weekend of August 10 through 12, according to Metro.
Last train times are as follows, according to Metro's website:
- "On Friday night, the last trains to operate through the work zone before work begins will be the 9:28 p.m. departure from Shady Grove and the 9:04 p.m. departure from Glenmont."
- "On Friday and Saturday nights, the last train from Shady Grove will depart at 1:58 a.m. (39 minutes earlier than normal) to allow for bus/rail connections. On Sunday night, the last train from Shady Grove will depart at 10:58 p.m."

Why are they doing this work on a weekend when the Nats have a big series with huge crowds expected for the Braves...and a day-night doubleheader on Saturday?
Makes no sense.
