Patch Asks: What Should Replace Filene's Basement?
What would you like to see move into the Mazza Gallerie vacancy once occupied by Filene's Basement?
Let's call this a modern spin on community planning—Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.
In this column, we'll present vacant buildings or lots, and ask you to tell us what you think would be their best use. Forget what zone they're in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other sleep-inducing zoning jargon. If you had your way, what would you like to see in these spots? What would be their best use for the community?

It's a big underground space, with great street-corner frontage at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue NW and Jenifer Street NW in Friendship Heights, Washington, DC.
What would you like to see move into that location?
Nearby is Anora (which is holding its going-out-of-business-sale), as well as the former location of Borders and the as-yet-to-be-built Friendship Heights Plaza.
