Rockville Pike Traffic Light To Operate 30 Extra Minutes
The State Highway Administration is attempting to alleviate backups on Walter Reed Bethesda's campus.
If you're venturing onto the Rockville Pike during rush hour, take heed.
Beginning Thursday evening, the State Highway Admininistration will test a re-calibration of the new traffic light at the North Wood Road gate to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The signal, which is only operational during rush hours, will be operating until 6:30 p.m. -- a half an hour longer than usual, reports county BRAC coordinator Phil Alperson.
The test is an attempt to relieve backups on Walter Reed Bethesda's campus, Alperson announced in an email.

Here are two thoughts that come to mind regarding the traffic in Bethesda and the proposed solutions of major disruptive construction plans and traffic lights.
Transportation planners could consider building a monorail system on 355 to help alleviate the long history of traffic troubles up and down this highly traveled road.
Another solution to consider is to build upcounty parking garages where commuters
can then catch buses to the NIH, Bethesda Naval Hospital, and Walter Reed destinations. These same commuters would also have access to the monorail system from these same parking garages. The monorail stop in the NIH area could incorporate a skywalk enclosed bridge, which would allow employees to cross to either the NIH or Bethesda Naval Hospital sides of the street. These types of proposed goals have the potential of simply taking more vehicles off of the road, and also increase pedestrian safety.

Monorail? Have you seen what it did for North Haverbrook?
