Should there be a marked pedestrian crossing on Jones Mill Road at Coquelin Terrace?

There is a sidewalk on the east side of Jones Mill Road south of the intersection, but there is no marked crossing at the intersection. There is also no real sidewalk on the west side of Jones Mill Road. This makes it hard for pedestrians from the neighborhood on the west side of Jones Mill Road to walk out of the neighborhood.

What do you think? Tell us in the comments.

Absolutely. Having a cross walk there will better connect neighbors and make it safer for children. The amount of trafffic on this road has increased dramatically in recent years, and will get even worse once the planned re-development of Chevy Chase Lake occurs. The time to start implementing pedestrian safety measures in this area is now.

I have been advocating for a crosswalk at that intersection for nearly a year now. Look at the traffic I recorded in February: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/instantupload/5712801520130564882

There are five houses on the west side of the street with school-age children who have no safe place to cross. Especially in light of the BRAC activities that will make Jones Mill only busier, we should install a crosswalk as soon as possible.

I should note that I received an email from the county saying that putting in a crosswalk "would provide the illusion of safety, but no real safety" because of the grade of the road and the blind curve to the south of Coquelin Terrace. It seems to me, then, that we may also need a stop sign, or some other signage alerting drivers to the new crosswalk.

Our county councilman, Robert Berliner, is working with me on this issue. If you would like his office to keep you updated, the contact is Zac Trupp, zac.trupp@montgomerycountymd.gov.

Of course everybody in the area would want a sidewalk...who wouldn't? There is very little cost to them considering the benefit. If it was up to individual neighborhoods, there would be a crosswalk at all their intersections. That's why we don't leave it up to individual neighborhoods. The cost to society as a whole would be huge....it would be impossible to drive down streets without stopping every 1/4 mile. Sure, you're increasing the value of your property...but at the expense of the public. Not fair, I say.

Milton: I could counter that what's "not fair" is commuters treating my neighborhood as though it were a freeway. We're not talking about Connecticut Ave - we're talking about a two-lane street with houses on each side. I could ask what's wrong with stopping every 1/4 mile on any street. Certainly, there are stop signs more often than that on, say, Brooksville RD, itself also a county road. If you want unimpeded transit, drive on Georgia, 16th, or Connecticut (and hope for timed lights)--don't try to speed down a residential district.

Any other response means you have not tried to cross this heavily congested residential street with or w/out children.
Safety first.

I drive this way every day on my commute to/from work and with kids in tow for their drop off. It's a very busy stretch of road. A marked pedestrian crossing for those with kids - or without - to get to bus stops etc would be a prudent decision. If Montgomery County wishes NOT to put one on there, perhaps they would like to fund a crossing guard for when school starts up so our county's children may safely board and deboard buses.
