SPEAK OUT: First Day of School Thoughts
Tell us in the comments what your thoughts are on the first day back.
Whether it instills dread or excitement, the phrase “back-to-school” is part of everyone’s vocabulary, especially as August approaches.
For many parents, it may mean it’s time to start thinking about school supply shopping, stocking the fridge for lunches and enforcing the bed times you let go over the summer.
For students, it probably means saying goodbye to the last of their summer freedoms and greeting stacks of homework and long days in a classroom.
Teachers, new and old, may be busy preparing assignments and lectures and wondering what their classes will be like this year.
However, there also is always a certain excitement associated with “back-to-school,” whether it’s a new first day outfit, reuniting with friends you didn’t see over the summer, gossiping about the new teacher, bragging about awesome summer vacations or settling back into the familiar school day routine.
Regardless of what your thoughts are on going “back-to-school,” one thing is for sure—we’ve all had them.
And everyone has a different way to prepare. Some students spend hours thinking about the perfect outfit or which seat to pick in their classes, while parents look up bus routes, lunch menus and school supply deals.
The first day back (Aug. 20 for Prince George’s County and Aug. 27 for Montgomery County) means something different for everyone, whether you’re a student, a parent or a teacher.
So, we want to know: What’s going through your mind on the first day of school? What do you do to prepare? Tell us in the comments.

For me, back-to-school stuff means that the end of the hot summer weather is in sight.

Back to School-for my Kindergartener-to me -he is growing up. Mom may no longer be the most important person to him. Teacher becomes a special person tohim.

I have three boys and for the first time I am sending my youngest to kindergarten with a severe peanut allergy. All my prior concerns fade in the face of my concerns for him - that each day he goes to school, he will come home. With a severe peanut allergy, sending him to school means I have to trust that he will not be exposed to peanuts, that if he is, the school will act within moments to save his life. I have to hope the other parents with have compassion and understand the seriousness of his medical condition. After safety, it is all a luxury.

For me it means heavier traffic, tighter parking at the Metro, trying to pass up the school buses before they make their frequent stops, and complaining from my son, who is not going to the high school that he hoped to go to. :-)
