Uptown Deli Closes; Haandi To Take Over Space
New York-style deli closed Aug. 14, Bethesda Magazine's Table Talk blog reports.
Uptown Deli on Norfolk Avenue has closed and the Indian restaurant Haandi will soon take over the space, Bethesda Magazine’s Table Talk blog reports.
Haandi will close its Fairmont Avenue location Aug. 31 ahead of the groundbreaking of a 17-story high-rise that will have 236 rental units, 6500-square-feet of ground floor retail, and more than three levels of below grade parking.
Sweet Basil and Foong Lin also will close ahead of the Fairmont Avenue construction.
Haandi co-owner Madan Sundriyal told Table Talk that Uptown Deli closed Aug. 14. The much-anticipated deli opened in 2010, but “deli maven” Howard Wasserman resigned in February after the eatery was sold to a new owner in October of 2011.
Now, it looks like the Uptown has closed its doors for good. Operators of Haandi, a fixture in the downtown Bethesda dining scene, will renovate the Uptown space to provide an “upscale” dining experience and expand their menu, Table Talk reports.
Will you miss Uptown Deli? Are you glad to see Haandi has found a new home in the Woodmont Triangle? Tell us in the comments.

With all the Jewish-heritage persons living or working in Downtown Bethesda, one would think Downtown Bethesda could support at least one Deli. What a SHANDA (Shame) !. Do we have to go to New York City to get a good Pastrami on Rye Sandwich?

Native is right. Parkway Deli rules. But it's not in walking distance. I, for one will miss Uptown Deli. Chasivan

Hello Lancemen and Lancewomen. Thanks for providing regional alternatives for deli fare so that I don't have to go to NYC. Now I feel that I am being treatied like a MENSCH rather than like CHOPPED LIVER. Seid Gesundt!

Uptown sucked. Crappy food, overpriced, inconsistent sandwiches, dumb layout. It's like 90% of Bethesda restaurants- good idea poorly executed. Good riddance.
