President Barack Obama delivered a message of reflection, service and unity in a video message marking the Jewish High Holy Days.

Jews around the world observe the new year this week with Rosh Hashanah celebrations that began Sunday evening and continue through sundown Tuesday.

The first of the High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah is followed by Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown on Sept. 25.

“I hope that Americans of all faiths can take this opportunity to reach out to those who are less fortunate, to be tolerant of our neighbors and to recognize ourselves in one another," Obama said. "And as a nation, let us be mindful of those who are suffering and renew the unbreakable bond that we share with our friends and allies, including the state of Israel.”
