Tuesday, Montgomery County Police second district commander Russell Hamill was promoted to the position of assistant chief of police. Hamill told Patch he’s looking forward to the new challenge, but he’ll miss his job in Bethesda.

We reported this week on the new intelligence community campus that’s planned for the Sangamore Road federal facility formerly home to the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. We also brought you news of a new restaurant — Naked Pizza — that arrived in Bethesda Friday. WTOP reported that another pizza restaurant that’s been on the horizon for Bethesda, Haven, will open by the end of October. With Naked Pizza and Haven joining an already crowded pizza market, is Bethesda pizza’ed out? No, according to our very unscientific poll.

In school and crime news, Montgomery County police are continuing to investigate three possibly related cases of hate vandalism — two at area middle schools. The crimes happened in July and there have been no arrests yet. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

A federal employee union claimed this week that parking restrictions at the new Walter Reed Bethesda are unfair to support staff, and our story on the group’s concerns also appeared on Huffpost DC. The hospital maintains that decisions about who receives parking placards are made with patient care in mind.

There was some good news to report this week — repairs are set to begin on the towpath breach near Old Angler’s Inn caused by Tropical Storm Hanna in 2008. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicked off, and we reported on a few pink-themed events going on around town. And of course, the famous Taste of Bethesda food festival returned to the Woodmont Triangle, and the day was a success despite the cold and rain.
