What to Do with the Kids During Winter Break in Montgomery County

The Montgomery County Department of Recreation offers half- and full-day programs.

Aside from summer break, winter break may be the most highly anticipated event for kids during the school year, but for many parents it is also one of the most stressful. Finding care for children can be challenging.

In Montgomery County, the recreation department is offering a few different programs.

Parents can select from the 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. half-day program or the full day, which runs until 3:30 p.m. Located at Cabin John Middle School, the program is designed for children ages 3 to 13 and runs from Dec. 26 through 28 and allows children to select from sports like soccer, basketball and kickball, or non-competitive games and activities.

Cost: Full day is $113 for Montgomery County residents, $128 for non-residents; half day is $60/$75. Extended day care is also available.

Karate Clinics Winter Break

If your 6-to-12-year-old children enjoy martial arts, the Tang Soo Do-style Korean jujitsu program might be a good choice. This morning-only program runs Dec. 26 through 31, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bauer Drive Community Center. Students will be grouped by belt level and work on kata, one-step sparring, falling, take downs, throwing and more.

Cost: $53 for Montgomery County residents, $68 for non-residents.

Visit the Montgomery County website for more details or to register for winter break classes.

It shouldn't be a newsworthy event for to give parents advice on what to do with children during winter school break nor should it involve activities that take the kids out of the home for half a day and payment for those activities. Why not have the parents do something with their children that doesn't involve shipping them off to someone else's care? If both parents work, then why split the child are responsibilities and take vacation time to be at home with their children? These times could and should be the most cherished in the memories of the children and spending them WITH their children will provide previous memories in the years to come, especially when the children have become adults snd have children of their own. I guarantee you the adults of tomorrow will not recall the events of a paid for 1/2 day public class/rec activity but rather those of time spent together in the home home during the holiday break. Having had 4 step-children & 1 natural born son who are now well into their thirties and forties, I can attest to the memories that are recalled and spoken of when we sll gather for special events and holidays.
