Getting Together for 20+ Years

In the Spring of 1991 a group of mommies met at the YMCA pre-natal aerobics class led by Camille Martone.  They bonded and have met intermittently ever since.

Last Saturday they marked the birthday of the oldest in the group now turning 60 (I am next), shared photos and information about who is doing what and shared the 20+ anniversary of this dedicated group.  The Irish Inn at Glen Echo was the chosen place, the food was delightful.  What a place to enjoy good food, a Fall day and a leisurely place to feast? Go to the Irish Inn at Glen Echo.

Life has moved along for all in the "group". One has divorced, two are widowed, several have had more children.  A few "newbies" have been added to the group, some have dropped out but it has moved forward.  It is notably important that we share college information as our children go to other places.  But we have stayed together, we have captured the lives of our children in photos, and our place in their lives.  We share our experences as our once in-utero connections have become grown adults and have their own opinions (no, I didn't really say that, I know it is - our babies have moved on).

As one who became one of the first widows in the group, I must say that this sort of association is pecularly, vitally important.  We by no means have the same shared opinions, politics and such.  We have very different opinions about where our children went to school and why.  But the group as a whole has been a nesting place, a gathering of comfort, of shared "timeframe" if nothing else, that has given us a collective "zone" that I would recommend to any young women embarking on that fascinating journey into motherhood.  It is ours.  It is something we hold together as women.  It is worthy of the walk.

What a wonderful group and lifetime experience you have shared. I started a book club a year and a half ago and it has become smoething similar - a little time we ladies carve out to share together and talk kids, family, work, life.... Oh and sometimes we talk about books too! Amy Maury
