Medstar Washington Hospital Center/ Georgetown University School of Medicine, will host an educational event at Medstar Women's Health Center as part of a public awareness campaign to help women impacted by overactive bladder and pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) and minimize any discomfort around having conversations about and seeking treatment of pelvic floor disorders. The campaign, “Break Free Today,” aims to help women understand the facts about PFDs and empower them with information on how to pursue individualized solutions for improved quality of life.

November is National Bladder Awareness Month. Nearly one in five women in the United States (U.S.) suffer from PFD-related overactive bladder (OAB), yet 80 percent of women with OAB never seek treatment and more than half believe that there are no effective treatments. As a result, women who suffer from OAB try to manage the condition on their own through coping strategies.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center/ Georgetown University School of Medicine , along with the PFD Alliance, wants to help the millions of women living with OAB and other PFD-related issues to know that they don’t have to live with it, and treatments are available. Presentation topics will include:

  • How overactive bladder and other PFDs can impact routine activities such as exercise, travel, work, and sex
  • Tools to track symptoms of overactive bladder and behavior related issues
  • Treatment options and the time affiliated for each procedure
  • Exercises to increase your core and prevent OAB and other related pelvic floor issues, including Pfilates and physical therapy
