Host of the notorious Whiz Bowl Championship cheesesteak-eating competion, South Street Steaks is considered by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the Best Dirt Cheap Eats. But, for all who are not familiar with authentic South Street Philly cuisine, a few words of warning from the shop:
"All cheesesteaks/chicken cheesesteaks come with fried onions unless you tell us otherwise. Sandwiches come with ca hoice of American cheese, Provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz (hence the name, Whiz Bowl). Sorry, no mayonnaise. The term 'hoagie' refers to a cold sub, so don't ask for a cheesesteak haogie."

Nice find, sparkling clean. Make a left on Cordell across the street from the Premier Apartment. Parking right past Catholic Charities. I was surprised by the friendly management,tasty sub-rolls, fresh with just a pinch of salt, and great cheese steak with the works with cheesewiz. Now I know what all the fuss is about. They even have my favorite beverage; Birch beer. South Street Steaks runs a lunch special everyday; with a 6 inch cheese steak,fries and a drink. For $5.99, and food left over, I see myself walking here once or twice a week. From the Trolly Stop in front of the triangle,of Veterans Park on Woodmont and Cordell. I liked the ambiance of the brushed steel tables,with a mural of Philly to the left.With a great window to look out of. The tile work was green,white and black similar to Little Taverns of the past.
Spanking,popping clean, no grease anywhere. I like their punch card for buying several cheese steaks getting one free. The management was fun,smart and intelligent. I like that. Clean,good food,great prices done... May they SSS and staff live very long and prosper past their wildest dreams...
