Universities at Shady Grove to Host 2014 Graduation Celebration

More Than 700 Students Will Graduate From Bachelor’s Degree Programs Offered on USG’s Campus; Md. Congressman John Delaney Will Give Keynote Address

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) – a University System of Maryland campus in Montgomery County that offers students more than 80 degree and certificate programs from nine different state universities – will honor Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 candidates for graduation on Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. This year, for the first time, more than 700 students receiving bachelor’s degrees will be honored at the event.
Maryland’s 6th District Congressman, John Delaney, will be the keynote speaker for this year’s USG graduation celebration.

“Every year, I am in awe of the students that graduate from our partner universities and go on to make extraordinary contributions to their fields of study,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, USG Executive Director and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University System of Maryland. “We are so proud of the students’ accomplishments and of the unique community that exists here at USG, as we collaborate with our nine partner universities to deliver a wide variety of degrees in the most desired fields of study.”

When students begin their course work at USG, they are already at the junior level. USG’s nine partner universities serve students who transfer to their programs with 60 credits – mostly from the area’s community colleges. More than 5,400 students have received bachelor’s degrees from programs offered at USG since the campus opened its doors to full-time programs in the fall of 2000.

In addition to Congressman Delaney’s keynote address, other speakers at the event will include Dr. William “Brit” Kirwan, Chancellor, University System of Maryland; and the following students: Sandrine Mbonwo, University of Maryland, College Park, Accounting; Joanna Linn, Towson University, Elementary and Special Education; Carlos Moya, UMBC, Political Science; Cindy Rivas, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Hotel and Restaurant Management; and Antoine Battle, University of Maryland, College Park, International Business.

USG’s 2014 graduation reception will be sponsored by the following corporate partners: Kaiser Permanente, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, EagleBank, Comcast, MedImmune, Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, Northrop Grumman, Pepco, Sodexo, State Farm and The Gazette.
