Are Journalists or Politicians Better Spellers?

The answer might surprise –- or depress you.

Do you ever delight in finding misspellings in the newspaper or in an online news story?

Well then this blog post is for you.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase Blogger Lejla Sarcevic, a graduate student at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism, covered a recent spelling bee at the National Press Club, which pitted journalists against politicians.

Among the participants were Chevy Chase’s own Ed Henry of Fox News, she wrote.

Sarcevic documented some of the more embarrassing failures of the night:

“Major Garrett of CBS was the sixth speller of the night and asked if CBS could please turn their cameras off, moments before spelling ‘vaccination’ wrong,” she wrote.

A similar spelling bee that pitted journalists against politicians hasn’t been held for 100 years, according to Sarcevic.

So which group prevailed as the better spellers?
