A white-tailed deer whose worst enemy in the Washington, D.C., area is likely a human behind the wheel apparently jumped into a cheetah enclosure at the National Zoo and was killed, according to news reports.

A zookeeper heard a commotion and the dead deer was found in the cheetah exhibit about 11:40 a.m. Friday, according to The Washington Post. There were reportedly two cheetahs in the enclosure.

The deer population in the city and surrounding suburbs has exploded, creating dangerous and sometimes bizarre encounters between humans and nature.

Earlier in December in Virginia, a woman was jogging on a path near the Dulles Greenway when an SUV driven by a 71-year-old woman struck a deer and sent it flying into the jogger, The Post reported. The driver and the woman were not seriously injured. The deer was killed.

On Dec. 20, a Prince George's County police car hit a deer, smashing the windshield and killing the deer, police said.

Must be a very slow news day. How is this a story? Pathetic

If the fence is low enough for a deer to get over, what is keeping the cheetahs from doing the same? It's no stretch of the imagination to say a cheetah can jump as high as a deer.

Eric S, the inside of the enclosure is lower than the outside, like a fence around a pit.

The idiots that be in Washington DC, need to pass a law so that MOST of the deer can be trapped and fed to the animals at the zoo. Oh! Hell! Wait a minute! That would make too much sense, and none of Americas top one percent would profit from it!

I think the two Cheetahs should be put down for this. I hate to see a carnivorous animal get away with an attack on such a defenseless herbvorious animal.

When my husband and I visited the National Zoo a few years back, we watched a Mallard duck land in the tiger enclosure, then one of the tigers pounced on it, killed it, and ate it. It was pretty fascinating and made for some great photos!
