'Frankenstorm' Dampens Beloved Bethesda Halloween Hot Spot

The party will still go on, but a famous Anniston Road Halloween light display will be scaled back this year after the storm.

The famous Halloween light show will go on this year at the Anniston Road home of professional lighting tech Jay Snyder, but the display will be scaled back following Hurricane Sandy.

Each year, trick-or-treaters come from miles around to the beloved Halloween hot spot -- so much so that neighbors report running out of candy every year even after buying massive quantities.

Following high winds and rain from Hurricane Sandy that stretched into Tuesday, Jay and his wife Cathy didn't have enough time to set up the extravaganza they had initially planned -- a giant LED screen playing monster movies and a dance floor with a DJ.

"We're all very bummed," Cathy Snyder said. "But we'll just do next year what we had planned to do this year."

In the meantime, trick-or-treaters can still stop by tonight to catch a scaled-back version of Snyder's usual over-the-top displays, including lights, visual effects, hanging props and a giant blow-up cat and spider.

Snyder started off with a few small decorations when he first moved into the house more than 20 years ago, but "probably only in the past six or seven years it's gotten as big as it has in terms of production and turnout," Jay Snyder told Patch in 2010, when we initially covered the Anniston Road Halloween happening.
