Whitman High Grad Awarded $10K Scholarship

The money, from Northrop Grumman, is for students interested in STEM fields.

A Montgomery County student was awarded $10,000 scholarship from Northrup Grumman Corporation to study engineering, computer science, physics or math.

Alexander Robert Pomerenk, Walt Whitman High School, a 2013 Walt Whitman High School grad, was one of just 24 winners in the 11th annual Engineering Scholars Competition, which provides a total of $240,000 to students across Maryland, according to a statement from the company.

“Northrop Grumman is honored to sponsor this scholarship competition that supports the pursuit of an engineering education by some of the state’s best-qualified math and science students,” Gloria A. Flach, corporate vice president and president of the company’s Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector, said in a statement.

Northrop Grumman, a global security company, is one of the state’s largest employers.

“High-technology companies across the nation, like Northrop Grumman, continue to face a critical shortage of specialized engineering personnel we need for our business,” according to a statement on the company's  website.

“These talented students represent the future of our country’s technology and innovation capability,” Flach said.
