How to Avoid Hipsters, Find the Bacon: Yelp Word Maps

If you've ever wondered where the epicenters of pasta, bacon and hipsters are in Montgomery County, now you can find out.

Something to consider about the Washington, DC, region: For hipsters, go to H Street NE. For bacon, go to Bethesda. And, for yuppies, it’s Arlington all the way.

Yelp!, a website that rates local businesses based on user reviews, released a series of word maps for the Washington, DC, region (inside the Capital Beltway only). The maps look at how many times users use certain words—like “bacon,” “hangover,” “cocktails” and “cheap"—in reviews. The areas where a certain word is used over and over are colored red on the map to denote that those areas are hot for that word.

In Montgomery County, the maps say to find bacon near the Bethesda Metro station, to find places described as “frat" near the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Woodmont Avenue and to find a teeny-tiny bit of “hipster” action in downtown Silver Spring, near Georgia and Wayne avenues.

Not surprisingly, if you’re in search of food described as “pricey,” Bethesda and Chevy Chase are the way to go, along with a smattering of "pricey" hot spots near downtown Silver Spring.

See what other words people are using to describe Montgomery County businesses by checking out the maps.
