Activist Maryland Teen to Become Openly Gay Eagle Scout When Ban Ends Jan. 1

Pascal Tessier, who took his cause to the national media, said, "There's so much more to do," after the ban on gay Boy Scouts was lifted. Gay Scouts will be admitted starting Jan. 1.

Gay youths will be allowed in the Boy Scouts of America for the first time starting Jan. 1, after the organization's national council voted in May to lift its longstanding ban on gay scouts.

The action clears the way for Pascal Tessier of Kensington, MD, to become one of the organization's first openly gay Eagle Scouts.

Tessier and his Bethesda-Chevy Chase Boy Scout Troop held a demonstration earlier this year at the National Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts, demanding that openly gay youth be admitted to the BSA, reports NBC Washington.

However, gay leaders in the organization remain banned and Tessier and his family hope to see that restriction lifted as well.

"I want to see adults be able to say, 'I am openly gay and want to teach them how to become leaders,'" Tessier told the TV station.

Last spring, as a junior at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, Tessier spoke with the national media as Boy Scout national leaders were considering changing the policy. He told The Washington Post he would be "devastated" if he were not allowed to earn Eagle Scout status because of his sexuality.

He told CBS News This Morning it was time that the Boy Scouts lifted the ban.

"Simply because you've been teaching something for a long amount of time doesn't mean it's right," he said.

Tessier said he was glad he would still be able to call himself a Boy Scout and become an Eagle Scout, but he said he would remain an activist on the issue.

"There's so much more to do," he told CBS News. "I'm not stopping. That's for sure."

President Obama and gay rights groups nationwide supported lifting the ban and the Tessier family spoke against the ban in an earlier video interview with the BBC.

He told the Post his experience as a Scout has been life-changing and he "wouldn’t be the person I am today without the Boy Scouts."

For more on the ban and Tessier's comments, view the accompanying CBS News video.

If you disagree with those who's faith does not agree with homosexuality, you're a bigot! Welcome to the club!
No more money January 01, 2014 at 07:40 AM
I like how all you xtians preach love and tolerance until it comes to homosexuality. And Albert, disagreeing doesn't make one a bigot. If I hated you, or wanted to exclude you because you are xtian, then I would be a bigot. That is why you are one and I am not. I want to include everybody regardless, you want to exclude a group based on the fact they are gay. It's sickening that the people still think gays don't belong in society. Jackie, I'm sorry to inform you that, just like blacks, gays are here to stay. I can't get the picture out of my head of the lot of you in white hoods telling black children they aren't allowed in school.
Michael Gabriel January 01, 2014 at 07:45 AM
For all the bigots and intolerant posters here, you really are stupid. Do you think that honesty and integrity are bad for Scouting? Do you really think that there have never been gay scouts before? A few of the posters here seem to have problems with showers or gays taking over the world... Paranoid much? Scouting has never been about sex. Its about learning and honesty and integrity. Its about working together and being the best person you can be. Why would that change now that young gay boys can participate? Lets also be reminded that we are talking about prepubescent boys, sex is not an issue here, and should not be an issue here. The BS of America has been a good experience for many young men in this country. It has also been a discriminatory group that denies that experience to some. That has changed and THAT is a good thing. Regardless of what the narrow minded or religious ultra self righteous say.

I'm SOOO glad this teen is identifying hinself by his privates and not his worth as an individual! NOT!
Jake Mooney January 01, 2014 at 10:46 AM
Michael Gabriel....Talk about stupid! If you could read instead of preach an agenda, you would see that this article is not about honesty and integrity, it is about sex. Why can't this young man and his family be proud of him becoming an Eagle Scout instead of being proud of his sexual orientation?
jag January 01, 2014 at 11:27 AM
I supremely enjoy watching the dwindling number of homophobes and bigots squirm more and more as their ilk literally die off. Silly ignorant and/or old people with their mushy, intolerant brains. Terrible, evil people throughout history have loved denigrating minorities (based on race, creed, sexual orientation - even handedness! I apologize if my being left handed offends anyone here), but the arc of justice inevitably means those terrible people eventually become nothing more than embarrassing chapters in a history book.
Kevin Smith Sr. January 01, 2014 at 11:35 AM
I'm sorry but I won't compromise or accept that homosexual behavior whether in Boy Scouts or in society is normal, because it's NOT. Yes, Boy Scouts has to allow openly gay scouts, but I won't allow our scouts to think that it's OK. Now don't misunderstand what I'm saying, I have charity for all but I won't allow you or anyone else "The New Modern Family" agenda to try and make me agree with this policy.
Tom Waterland January 01, 2014 at 01:23 PM
no more money” vilifying those who don’t agree with you shows how ignorant you are. If I say gays should not be allowed in the BSA that makes me an intolerant a bigot? Really? If I say, the bible forbids homosexuality , the bible that I read is incorrect? The BSA was founded on a number of principles, which have been mentioned in other posts and because you don’t agree with them their wrong. Really? You obviously were not/not a Boy Scout!
John January 01, 2014 at 02:00 PM
He can not be an Eagle Scout as he has broken requirements. He lied by hiding his being gay. He is not mantaining his oath to be morally straight, and his swearing to god to live by these promises. As an Eagle Scout myself from 2 decades agao he can not recieve the rank and if it is given I hope all Eagle scouts protest it and seek their local consoles to make the BSA National committe to stand by its requirements.
No more money January 01, 2014 at 02:05 PM
Yes Tom - if you say gays shouldn't be allowed in the scouts that makes you a bigot. Saying the bible condemns homosexuality when you do not live by the rest of the law - as stated in Galatians 3 of your bible - makes you a hypocrite. You obviously only read the parts of the bible you choose, and skip the rest.
No more money January 01, 2014 at 02:08 PM
John - go to the BSA website and read their definition of morally straight. You obviously never have. There is nothing he did that broke the oath. You don't know that he hid being gay, however if he did it was for self preservation. All of you here are ready to don hoods and robes and ride him right out of your precious scouts.
John January 01, 2014 at 02:52 PM
No More Money - Obviously you were not or are not involved in the BSA as you seem to want to twist your own idealogy into what the Scouts are founded on. I reall dislike people like yourself that believe we can all live our lives as we wish or believe as we want as long as it fits your views. I went through cub scouts, boys scouts, Eagle scouts, Order of the arrow and junior leader training. It is very very clear what is meant by " I promise to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and Morally straight..." Also figure in you pledge to honor god and to be trustworthy so if he did lie or conceal a lie then he has already broken his word to the BSA making him ineligable. If he did it for the reason you stated for his own self then he has made it even worse. I like how you put in your post that by holding people to the predefined requirements of the rank means being a hooded klan member. The thing here you don't understand maybe it's just to complicated for you is the BSA is a private organization that has a set standard or policy for those who wish to join. If you do not comply or disagree then you are welcome to go where you can comply or be with those who agree with you. The small 1 percent who have a gay life style do not get to dictate everyones elese beliefs or personal morality. he can not force his lifestyle over this organizations core standards sorry. Maybe school would help you if you took a US liberties class or basica liberty law class.
Kay Rosenthal January 01, 2014 at 02:52 PM
I'm thrilled. The Boy Scouts have finally caught up with the Girl Scouts! YEAH!
No more money January 01, 2014 at 03:07 PM
John - Go read the definition on the scout web site. It says nothing about being straight sexually. I hate how people like you think you can hold the entire population hostage by saying that you are the majority. However, since they receive support from the government, which all taxpayers gay and straight pay taxes into, then they have no right to discriminate. If they want to be exclusionary, then act like a private entity and take no government handouts what so ever.
John January 01, 2014 at 03:25 PM
No More Money- Me hold someone hostage ? lol Im not forcing anyone to change their beliefs or to force my way of life on anyone unlike this kid and the hate group known as the LGBT community that pretends to preach tolerence unless you disagree with them then they come at you with violence and hatred. I have no ill feeling to this kid or anyone who is gay. It;s not my thing and I dont understand it or support it but be happy go be you. Now that requires you also give that same respect...Again your repeating go read the web site and I say I do not have to as I lived that code and it is very clearly explained in detail at every scout function. What were you taught when you were in Boy Scouts at each meeting held in a church or even the National Jamboree. Again it is the gay community that wants to dictate the world in their own beliefs. For some reason they can not actually understand tolerence due to the hate they seem to be filled with. Why can't those who are straight believe in what they believe and go on with life? Why do they have to get rid of their beliefs or moral vales to be what the gay community wants. In that way of closed minded thinking your preaching that its the gay way or no way. makes no sense except to a hypocrite life or the ignorant. I can see you seem to be gay which is fine and I have no issue with you doing you be happy good luck , but if you try to force it on me get ready for a fight as I'm going to be me and that does not involve the gay lifestyle/ Why not form a gay Scout organization build it to what you like and believe and we all can be happy and have our own happy lives..

As Christians, we are required to love our neighbor as ourselves in several verses including Mark 12:33. In Romans 6:23, we are taught that "... the wages of sin is death...". Since sin is rejection of God, and recurrent, unrepentant sin separates us from God; we demonstrate our love for our neighbor when we respectfully warn them regarding sin. Such warning should be done with humility since we all sin frequently and require repentance.
The Underground Conservative January 01, 2014 at 04:07 PM
Glad my sons will never be in the Gay Scouts.
Vmr Leathercraft January 01, 2014 at 05:48 PM
@no more money: STOP including Blacks in with the gay struggle ! Most black people do not want the association with the gay struggle. You can bet your ass there were thousands of gay whites under those pointy hoods. Every time gays need a crutch argument to go to , it's the black struggle. We have our own problems in our own community to deal with instead of taking on any "orphan" struggles. Nothing personal, but stay away from us and fight your own damn fight !
Wesley Pharr January 01, 2014 at 06:53 PM
Good for Pascal! I am an Eagle Scout also, did everything you could do in scouting, God and Country, Vigil member in Order of the Arrow, and Lodge Chief, also I was elected the first president of the National Eagle Scout Association and have traveled extensively with the scouts; I also worked at our council scout camp, and was hired to be an instructor at the National Camp School, an adult scout training camp before I was even old enough to attend the school! I commend you on your honesty and bravery to accept who you are, and this attitude will help you to become a stronger person. I do not believe you have to be a religious person to be a good person; do the right thing even if no one watching. Good luck to you in the future, I'm sure that you will make your mark on the world! Best wishes to you, Wesley Pharr
Josh Sexton January 01, 2014 at 07:54 PM
There is nothing within the Scriptures that states that what we all know of as homosexuality today is wrong, or a sin, or an abomination. This is FAR from the first time the Scriptures have been misused, how about we all do our best to make sure it is the last?
jackie miller January 02, 2014 at 01:19 AM
No more money, I had nothing to do with a white hood. You want it your way or the highway. Frankly my dear, I don' give a d.. if you are gay, nor the lot of you. Racist snears and years of listening to blacks. The first black slave owner was BLACK..take your evil mind elsewhere, and try to sort out all the rage against white people...this is about sex, not the Scouts, and your name is what will happen to the Scouts, no more money! Period and Josh S. did you ever read, Sodom and Gomorrah? Try it and get aquainted with what it says...the place has been found, burned!
Jenniffer Parker January 02, 2014 at 10:44 AM
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
Jenniffer Parker January 02, 2014 at 10:46 AM
Vmr are you not aware that there were plenty of non-black and even homosexuals who fought for black civil rights? You make me sad.
Mark Twain January 02, 2014 at 11:15 AM
This will likely open a few "back"doors for this young man/woman wannabe and sadly close many for the real Scouts of this country. Truth is, I understand they are born with this mental condition but I do not accept that we must cater to them. Why couldn't he start his own boytoys of America or toys for bots and leave the rest of us normal people with normal children the hello alone?
gpaulfern January 02, 2014 at 12:04 PM
Jennifer and No more money - "... Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities near them, which like them committed sexual sins and pursued homosexual activities, ... Jude 1:7
gpaulfern January 02, 2014 at 12:17 PM
Josh: There is no lack of clarity in Lev 20:13 " If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination..."
Victor Lucas January 02, 2014 at 12:36 PM
@VMR - tell that to Corretta Scott King, and all of the black gay people. They seem to believe otherwise. Of course the struggles are not exactly the same, but both are civil rights issues, and in both cases the bible was used as justification. It is sad to see someone who has faced discrimination themselves, turn that discrimination on others.
Victor Lucas January 02, 2014 at 12:38 PM
@Tom Waterland " If I say, the bible forbids homosexuality , the bible that I read is incorrect? " No, it means you have interpreted it incorrectly . .or more likely, someone has interpreted it for you with their own set of biases.
jag January 02, 2014 at 01:50 PM
The bible says tons of horrific things that no one of stable mind listens to. Who cares. Anyone with an iota of brain matter doesn't try to use the thing as some sort of "truth." Certainly anyone trying to use a bible to disparage entire groups of people is not someone Jesus or any upstanding person would call friend.
gpaulfern January 03, 2014 at 12:45 AM
No More Money, As you read Galatians, don't overlook chapters 5 and 6.
