Moms Talk: Why Not Splurge?

Can "mom's guilt" be a barrier when it comes to treating ourselves?

Welcome back to Mom's Talk! Each week, our Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community are all welcome to weigh in and use the discussion forum as a resource. Each week, we'll pose a question and solicit feedback on a wide array of issues, but you should feel free to suggest questions you'd like to see discussed as well.

This week, our discussion turns to "treating yourself" once in a while.  If you're anything like me, then it's pretty easy to talk yourself into getting the $75 version of toy X "because he'll like it more." Or, you'll splurge for the backpack that your kid wanted because it had the right Star Wars character embossed on it.

It's easy to decide to sign your kid up for the summer camp he wanted even though it was $200 a week more than you'd budgeted, but hey, all his friends are going there, so how could you deprive him?

Same goes for the house. You only will buy XYZ appliance once every ten years, so why not splurge on the washer and dryer, right?

But somehow, the line gets drawn on buying stuff for yourself. Or at least, it does for me. Want a new bag?  I can't justify it. Maybe I can buy some cheap bag on clearance at DSW that at least functions the way I need it to.

New shoes? It takes a really special occasion for me to just roll into Nordstrom and buy whatever dress or outfit it is that suits me rather than heading to the sale rack first.

Why is it that I can spend thousands of dollars a year on these enrichment classes and lessons for the kids, but when it comes to me, I feel guilty splurging for a boot camp class?

I know I'm not the only mom out there who will do what it takes to give her kids what they want (and beyond!), but when it comes to buying for myself, I have to "really" need it before I get it. So moms, does this sound familiar? When was the last time you splurged? Can "mom's guilt" be a barrier when it comes to treating ourselves?
