School Closing/Delay Information for Montgomery County

Here's how to find information on school schedules for Monday, March 17, 2014.

The National Weather Service is expecting 3 inches to up to 5 inches of snow in Bowie and Prince George’s County Sunday night and Monday. So, what does that mean for schools?

There has been no announcement on school closings for Monday in Montgomery County.

A decision is usually made by 5 a.m. if school schedules will be changed. The first alert is posted on the district’s website and on Twitter at MCPS.

As of March 6, Montgomery County Public Schools had called off classes nine days because of snow. The 2013-2014 school calendar has four snow days built in, so MCPS is five days over its allotted number of snow days.

The state of Maryland requires districts provide at least 180 days of instruction. Unless MCPS receives a state waiver, five school days will be added to the end of the school year, which would make June 19 the last day of school for students.

MCPS has applied for a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education that would allow the district to go below the 180-day requirement. Under the plan submitted to the state, MCPS would extend the school year by one day to June 13, and four of the snow days would not have to be made up.

School officials are waiting to hear from the state if the waiver will be granted.
