Snow Emergency Plan Canceled in Montgomery County

Update (Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m.): Montgomery County's snow ban and emergency restrictions ended at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Original post (Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 4 p.m.): Montgomery County's snow emergency plan went into effect at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Under a snow emergency in the county, the following regulations are in effect, according to the county's public information office:

• It is illegal to park vehicles along designated snow emergency routes. Those vehicles will be towed. Vehicle owners will be responsible for all towing and impoundment fees and will also be subject to fines and penalties.
• It is also illegal to drive on snow emergency routes without snow tires, mud/snow radials or tire chains.
• During a snow emergency, taxi cabs operating in the county are allowed to charge $2.50 extra per trip.

"Prominent red and white signs designate certain roads as snow emergency routes that are kept clear throughout storms for police, fire and other emergency vehicles," an email from the county's public information office added.

Both Maryland and the county have designated snow emergency routes.

Rockville residents, property managers and business owners are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 12 hours of the last snowfall or freeze. 

Also in Rockville: If the weather allows, regular recycling will be held as scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Cancellations will be noted on the city’s website. If recycling is cancelled on Wednesday, the make-up date will be Saturday, Jan. 25. Residents who put out recyclables are asked not to put containers in areas that would interfere with snow plowing.
