UPDATE: Three Lanes on Beltway Inner Loop to Close For Construction Over Next Two Nights

Three left lanes between Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue on the Inner Loop of the Beltway will be closed during the next two nights.

UPDATE:

Charlie Gischlar, public information officer for the Maryland State Highway Administration, said "crews were able to complete all necessary repairs to the inner loop of I-495 Bridge over MD 185 last night.  There will be no closures associated with the repair tonight [April 24]."

Original Story:

At 10 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close the three left lanes on the inner loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) between MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue, exit 33) and MD 97 (Georgia Avenue, exit 31).

The overnight closures will allow crews to perform emergency repairs on the I-495 bridge over Kensington Avenue (just east of Connecticut Avenue) tonight and tomorrow night, weather permitting. All lanes of traffic will be open no later than 5 a.m. each day.

The emergency work requires cutting out a large section of concrete and pouring new concrete, which takes several hours to cure.  Motorists should consider using MD 410 as an alternate route, which runs parallel to I-495 to the south.

SHA thanks motorists for their patience as crews work to complete the repairs as scheduled.  As crews work to keep construction zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.

Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone.
