Books Alive Conference, Wellness Fair, 'Park in the Dark' Hayride and More This Weekend

Looking for something exciting to do this weekend? Check out some of the fun things going on around the county.

Cinderella

  • Where: The Puppet Co. Playhouse, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo.
  • When: Closes this weekend. Last performances: Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9, at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Description: See an elegant production of the classic children’s favorite. Set in 17th-century France, the story combines beautifully elaborate costumes of the Comedie Francais and Offenbach’s "Gaiety Parisian" to adorn the tale of the cinder girl who captures the heart of the handsome prince. Acclaimed at the 1997 National Puppet Festival and the Center for Puppetry Arts. Recommended for kindergartners through sixth-grade students.

BooksAlive! 2013 Conference

  • Where: Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Rd., Rockville.
  • When: Saturday, June 8, 9 a.m.
  • Description: A writer's conference will be held June 8 at the North Bethesda Marriott and will provide access to agents as well as interesting panels.
  • Cost: $220.

11th Annual Watkins Meadow Community Yard Sale

  • When:  Saturday, June 8, 8 a.m.
  • Description: Thousands of treasures. Books, clothing, household furniture, electronics, riding mower, snow thrower, tools, knic-knacks, toys, kids’ stuff, craft supplies, sewing items, scrapbooking supplies.
  • Cost: Free.

Be Active Montgomery Health and Wellness Fair

  • Where: South Germantown Recreational Park, 14501 Schaeffer Rd., Germantown.
  • When: Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m.
  • Description: Free event that will include the United Way Fun, Fly and Fit obstacle course; healthy food vendors; fitness walks; and interactive demonstrations such as Quick Start tennis, Zumba and golf clinics. Attendees who complete the fitness challenge will receive free admission to the Germantown Indoor Swim Center and the miniature golf course.
  • Cost: Free.

Evening Hayride “Park in the Dark”

  • Where: Seneca Creek State Park, 11950 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg.
  • When: Friday, June 7, 8:30 p.m.
  • Description: Visitors are invited on a hayride to see the nocturnal animals of the park.
  • Cost: $2.

Derek Sheely LEAD THE WAY 4.0-Mile Race

  • Where: Northwest High School, 13591 Richter Farm Rd., Germantown.
  • When: Saturday, June 8, 8 a.m.
  • Description: Held in honor of Derek Sheely, this race is to raise funds for a concussion awareness campaign and The Derek Thomson Sheely Leadership Award, a scholarship awarded to the Frostburg State University junior who exemplifies Derek's leadership, academic and charitable qualities. The second annual 4-mile out-and-back run and 1-mile walk is at Northwest High School and the neighborhood where Derek grew up. There's a unique stadium start and finish, medals for all finishers, music, and door prizes.
  • Cost: $25.

Fairgrounds Flea Market

  • Where: Montgomery County Agricultural Services, 16 Chestnut St., Gaithersburg.
  • When: Saturday, June 8, 8 a.m.
  • Description: Vendors are selling many sought-after items including antiques, international and domestic crafts, jewelry, art, household goods, perfumes, furniture, various collectibles, electronics, toys, tools, clothes and other new/used items. 
  • Cost: Free.

Bethesda Big Train Baseball Game

  • Where: 10600 Westlake Dr., Bethesda.
  • When: Friday, June 7, 7:30 to 10 p.m.
  • Description: Visitors are invited to Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Regional Park all summer long to enjoy baseball and fun and affordable family entertainment.
  • Cost: $9.

Free Summer Concerts

  • Where: Woodmont and Norfolk avenues, Bethesda.
  • When: Thursday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Description: With warm summer weather approaching, patrons will be able to delight in weekly outdoor concerts in downtown Bethesda. This series, produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, will feature free Thursday evening concerts during May, June and July.
  • Cost: Free.

Pontoon Boat Tours at Seneca Creek State Park

  • Where: Seneca Creek State Park, 11950 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg.
  • When:  Saturday, June 8, 1 p.m.  
  • Description: Visitors are invited to join a Park Ranger for a guided exploration of Clopper Lake aboard the pontoon boat "Blue Heron."  Visitors will learn about the birds, fish and mammals that call the lake home.
  • Cost: $5.

Learn to Speedskate—Potomac Speedskating Club

  • Where: 10610 Westlake Dr., Rockville.
  • When: Friday, June 7, 9 p.m.
  • Description: The Potomac Speedskating Club, coached by Olympic champion Ji-hoon Chae, welcomes skaters ages 5 and up to join the team. Bike helmet is required.   
  • Cost: Free trial lesson. (Cost of summer camps and mini-camps available during free trial lesson.)
