'Cornucopia' Exhibit Takes a Bite Out of Hunger

Capitol Arts Network shows women's art with a heart at Washington School of Photography.

There’s always good food to be had in Bethesda, but this Friday night there will also be a feast for the eyes, and food for the needy, all wrapped up in one special event.

will host Capitol Arts Network’s “Cornucopia” event, showcasing women artists' renderings of food in celebration of the abundant month of October (and marking National Apple, Popcorn, Caramel, Pineapple and Vegetarian Month, among others).

“Women’s Art With a Heart” will benefit the Manna Food Center.  At the opening reception from 6-9 p.m. Friday, held in conjunction with patrons are asked to bring non-perishable food donations.

Manna is the main food bank for Montgomery County and has distributed more than 36 million pounds of food to more than 2.3 million people in the county since 1983. (Like all food banks in our area and across the country, the protracted poor economic times are stretching Manna’s resources to the limit, so please give generously.)

Capitol Arts Network, a Maryland nonprofit, provides fine arts training and opportunities for artists to network and display their work. The three jurors for the “Cornucopia” exhibit are members of the Capitol Arts Network board -- renowned photographer and Fraser Gallery director Catriona Fraser, artist and arts educator Judith HeartSong, and Washington School of Photography executive director Missy Loewe.

“The idea for the show came from all three jurors in a brainstorming session about the fall, the need to be of service (hence, the food bank drive that night), and the desire for a woman-only show," Loewe said. "I think Judith HeartSong named it, but it really came quickly to all three jurors as an idea worthy of a show."

There will be 16 female artists from all over the metro area represented in the exhibit. The works range from photos to mixed media, from oil on glass to colored pencil. The images are variously lush and whimsical, colorful and nuanced. The subjects run the gamut from traditional still life fruit to guilty-pleasure snacks. Stop by Friday, and take a bite!
