Literary Festival, Day of the Book, 'Peter Pan' and More Near Bethesda, Chevy Chase This Weekend

Bethesda Literary Festival

  • Where: Bethesda Library, 7400 Arlington Rd., Bethesda.

  • Description: Downtown Bethesda celebrates the diversity of modern literature by presenting the 14th annual Bethesda Literary Festival from Friday, April 19, to Sunday, April 21, 2013.

8th Annual Kensington Day of the Book Festival

  • Where: Kensington Day of the Book Festival, 3786 Howard Ave., Kensington.
  • When:  Sunday, April 21, 11 a.m.
  • Description: Family-friendly street festival celebrates the International Day of the Book in historic Old Town Kensington. More than 100 local authors, poets, publishers, literary groups and community organizations line Howard Avenue for three blocks. Live music featuring The Nighthawks, Atomic Swing Club and others. Author readings, poetry open mic, chess playing, food trucks, free books, rare book evaluations, art exhibits. Children's Program includes storytelling, fun with math, art activities, magical story times, a miniature horse, a scavenger hunt, and more.

Documentary: Record Paradise: The Musical Life of Joe Lee

  • Where: AFI Silver Theatre.
  • When: Saturday, April 20.
  • Description: A documentary tribute to Joe Lee, founder of Joe's Record Paradise and progeny of two of Maryland's most influential families, was a prep school reject who managed to build a business with serious rock cred—despite the fact that his family had deep political ties. 
  • Cost: $5.

Sierra Club of Montgomery County First Ever Bike Ride

  • Where: Veteran's Plaza, One Veteran's Plaza, Silver Spring.
  • When: April 20, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Description: The Montgomery Sierra Club presents a bike ride, with discussion, from Silver Spring to Takoma Park and back again. Hardier riders will continue on to Wheaton.
  • Cost: Free.

Wootton Center for the Arts Presents Ragtime Show

  • Where: 2100 Wootton Parkway, Rockville.
  • When:  Friday, April 19, 7:30 p.m.
  • Description: Ragtime features the hard work of nearly 200 Wootton students. Based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel of the same name, Ragtime.
  • Cost: $10.

Community Shred and Food Drive

  • Where: 12820 Wisteria Dr., Germantown.
  • When: Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m.
  • Description: All shredding will be done on site. There will be free food and drinks. Come play the MAFCU Plinko board for a chance to win a prize, or get a balloon animal made. Bring a nonperishable food item for Manna Food Center and help fight hunger in Montgomery County.
  • Cost: Free.

The Beauty of Spring: A Community Tea Time

  • Where: International Cultural Center, 19650 Club House Rd., Montgomery Village.
  • When: Sunday, April 21, 3 p.m.
  • Description: A multi-cultural celebration of the Beauty of Spring at this month’s ICC Community Tea Time.
  • Cost: Free.

Ben’s Run

  • Where: Stonegate Elementary School, 14811 Notley Rd., Silver Spring.
  • When: Saturday, April 20, 7:30 a.m.
  • Description: A 5K timed race, 1 mile fun run, all to raise money for the Children’s Hospital. 
  • Cost: $25.

Bluegrass and Barbecue Evening

  • Where: 12430 Scaggsville Rd., Highland.
  • When: Friday, April 19, 6 p.m.
  • Description: Mt. Zion UMC will be hosting a Bluegrass and Barbecue Evening featuring music from the Colman’s Bluegrass Group.
  • Cost: $8.

Azalea Classic 5K 2013

  • Where: University Park Elementary, 4315 Underwood St., University Park.
  • When: Saturday, April 20, 8 a.m.
  • Description: The 12th annual Azalea Classic 5K's proceeds go to the University Park Elementary School PTA.
  • Cost: $20.

Little Bennett Elementary School PTA Yard Sale

  • Where: 23930 Burdette Forest Rd., Clarksburg.
  • When: Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m.
  • Description: Little Bennett Elementary School PTA Spring Yard Sale features a "green" theme. The yard sale will be held in the LBES All Purpose Room and Gymnasium, so the event will go on rain or shine.
