Local High School Students Get a Shot at the Prize

Annual gallery exhibit opens Friday at Washington School of Photography.

An exciting addition to this Friday’s monthlywill be the 9th Annual All Montgomery High School Gallery Show, presented by The exhibit will feature the work of high-school-age residents of Montgomery County or those enrolled in Montgomery County public or private high schools.

“We really look forward to the show each year and are always amazed at how good the work is, and how creative and professional the work continues to be,” said WSP director Missy Lowe.

All types of photographic work are eligible: traditional black and white and color, digital, silver gelatin, c-print, etc. Students are allowed to submit up to two images, with dimensions 8”x10” or 11” x 14” and a 2” or 3” mat. Entry is free.

The entry deadline was Dec. 5, which means staff and volunteers at WSP are now at work turning the submissions into a show.

“It is…great fun for the staff as we unwrap each new image” to hang the show, said Lowe. Show guidelines allowed instructors or school photography club leaders to bring in the work for all participating students, or students could deliver individually.

According to Lowe, “In some schools, photography is a class, in others, a club, but the quality from them all is as high as most adult camera clubs.”

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners-- both cash and donated camera accessories, as well as WSP merchandise.

Attendees Friday evening will find music, the popcorn machine humming, and parents, students, friends and instructors--as well as WSP staff and students and the public "sharing in the creative success of our county,” Lowe told Patch.

The Washington Gallery of Photography at the Washington School of Photography in Bethesda is a 3,000-square-foot multipurpose gallery and studio. The high school show runs until mid-January 2012.
