Local Author Sells Nonfiction Books, Quality Compost at Farm Market

Purchase books by local author Eric Rekstein from Rekstein himself at the Bethesda Farm Women's Market.

The Bethesda Farm Women's Market isn't just a place to buy local fruits, vegetables and other edibles.

The market—which has been operating at 7155 Wisconsin Ave. since the 1930s—is also a place to purchase local art work and other locally-made items, including books by local author Eric Rekstein.

Rekstein—a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, just a few blocks away from the market—sells copies of two of his published books at the market.

On Moon Square, published in the summer of 2013, was inspired by revolutions in Eastern Europe. It's a nonfiction journey that reads like a page-turning fiction book, except it's real, Rekstein described the book to Patch.

The book is available on Amazon.com, but if you can get to the market to buy it, you can meet the author himself.

Rekstein also sells copies of his other book, My Life: What Not To Do; #1-10, published in the summer of 2012, at the market (and on Amazon.com). The book is also nonfiction—it's a series of nonfiction shorts that are dry but real and "darkly funny," he said.

At the market, Rekstein sells On Moon Square for $9, and My Life for $6. He gave a reading from On Moon Square in Baltimore this past week, and hopes to do other local readings soon.

Rekstein also sells his own, locally-made compost Earth Brew Compost at the market. The compost is made partly from coffee grounds and vegetable peelings.

The Bethesda Farm Women's Market (7155 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda) is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sundays, there is an outdoor flea market in the yard and parking lot of the building.
