Today's Dental Implants: ‘Implants in a Day’ with Very Little Pain

Having dental implants placed in your jaw sounds potentially painful, especially if the implants are placed in a single day, but advanced prosthetic dentistry actually can provide a quick, effective and comfortable pain-free experience for dental patients. However, due to common misconceptions, many patients suffering from damaged or missing teeth have a fear of undergoing these procedures. With over 30 years of experience with inserting and restoring dental implants, Dr. Gerald M. Marlin, a Chevy Chase Prosthodontist, has developed a surgical protocol that prevents his patients from experiencing significant post-operative discomfort. In fact, the majority of his patients only take Advil®, Motrin®, or the generic version, Ibuprofen, after the implant surgery.

This surgical protocol includes extensive preplanning with cone beam CT scans (CBCT) which provides detailed 3D images upon which, he “places” the projected dental implants in their precise positions. First, he evaluates the best sites and the ideal access to them with the least trauma, and then he “inserts” them right on the CT scan. Then he has a surgical stent fabricated that directs the clinical, precise placement. With a delicate manipulation of the tissues, with a precise preparation of the sites followed by the gentle placement of the implants, and with a definitive control of the pain medications before, during, and after the surgery, Dr. Marlin is able to keep his patients from experiencing any major discomfort.

As a recent example of one of our DC dental implant patients, two days ago, a single tooth implant in a very hard area to access was inserted by using a CT scan generated surgical guide (a very precise appliance), and the patient had absolutely no pain. He barely even knows that it is there, and said that he found the entire procedure to be comfortable and said he fears were completely unfounded.
