Behind the Counter: Bethesda Bagels

Bethesda Bagels is a local favorite that's expanding.

a New York-style bagel shop and deli, has operated in Bethesda for nearly 30 years -- and their business is expanding.

According to manager Michael Little, the Bethesda favorite recently opened a Dupont Circle location. The business has grown over time, according to Little, who has worked at the shop for three years. A family business with a focus on customer service, the shop was opened by David Levin and Stephen Fleishman, and there’s been a line at the door ever since.

“We feed about every person going to work in Bethesda in the morning,” Little said. A consistent line of five or six was apparent as late as 3 p.m. on a recent weekday.

The popular shop even boasts has an iPhone app that allows customers to order their bagels on the go.

“Everyone should spend a Saturday morning around here in the gauntlet, as we call it,” Little said, referring to the busy restaurant. “It’s worth the wait. It’s daunting when you walk up and see the line, but we get people in and out quickly. “

Open until 5 p.m. on weekdays, the business is more than just your typical breakfast spot. The shop offers several types of New York style bagels and many homemade spreads, salads and deli meats.

“Eat more bagels, that’s my final comment,” said Little. “And come see us in Dupont.”
