Bethesda Green will hold its third annual Bethesda Green Gala to honor the city’s top eco-friendly community members Thursday evening. The nonprofit paired up with Bethesda Magazine to recognize seven Green Award Winners for their adoption of environmentally-friendly practices and eco-friendly way of business.
“We want to lift up and spotlight these individuals, organizations and community groups that are doing the kinds of things that are really helping the environment,” said Dave Heffernan, Director of Communications for Bethesda Green. “We want to publicize what they’re doing and hope that they will inspire others in the community to do some of the same sorts of things.”
An independent panel of judges selected the winners out of 85 nominations, Heffernan said. The seven winners will be featured in Bethesda Magazine to show off their stride to preserve the environment. Each winner will also receive a plaque honoring their achievements.
The event will have a “The Sky Is The Limit” theme, complete with music, food, local beer and wine, and a silent auction. Some of the items up for a silent auction bid include an autographed jersey from Washington Wizards basketball star John Wall, a reclaimed wood coffee table by Alan Black Woodworking and a DoubleTree by Hilton Bethesda weekend stay—among dozens of other items.
Appropriately enough, the venue of the event is a “green” building. “The venue is an office building that was the region’s first LEED Platinum certified building, which symbolizes green practices in building construction,” Heffernan says. “It’s really exciting for us to be going to this venue to spotlight these companies and the whole sustainability effort.”
