Excavation Launches At Gallery of Bethesda Construction Site

17-story retail, residential tower is planned for 4800 Auburn Avenue.

Demolition is complete and excavation is underway at the construction site of the Gallery of Bethesda, a planned for 4800 Auburn Avenue, DCMud reports.

The development will feature 234 apartments and more than 4,600 square feet of ground-floor retail facing Del Ray and Auburn Avenues.

When complete, it will mark the first phase of a larger plan, known as Plans call for an additional 16-story residential and retail building for nearby 4850 Rugby Avenue, separated from the Gallery of Bethesda by a quarter-acre plaza. No groundbreaking date has been set for 4830 Rugby or the third phase of the project, which will bring a six-story office building to 8280 Wisconsin, a site at the corner of Battery Lane.

The Gallery of Bethesda project

Jad Donohoe, of developers the Donohoe Companies, tells DCMud that excavation will be complete in November, the 17-story structure will "top out" in July of 2013, and residents are expected to move in in early 2014.

"The Gallery of Bethesda is going to bring more life and more activity to this part of Bethesda, and it’s going to prove all over again why Bethesda is one of the best places to live in the Washington region," Donohoe told DCMud.

According to developers, The Gallery of Bethesda will boast amenities including a rooftop pool, sundeck and clubroom, a fitness room and coffee bar.
