Lululemon Debuts New Yoga Pants, Sans Sheer

Company blog: Pants now undergo tests 'to make sure you get great ass coverage.'

Lululemon's recently recalled luon stretch knit yoga pants are back this month—but this time, they've got more fabric across the derriere, according to a company blog.

Last spring, the luon pants were recalled after many customers complained about the pants being too sheer across the backside.

"Nearly 17 percent of the yoga pants sold in [Lululemon] stores [in March] were recalled due to an 'unacceptable level of sheerness,'" Patch reported. "Compounding the debacle were reports that customers seeking to return the pants were asked to bend over to demonstrate the fabric's shortcomings, though the corporation later said that no 'downward-facing dog' was required."

But now, the luon pants are back, NPR reported, and—the store says—they're better than ever before:

"The luon setback allowed us to take a hard look at every aspect of this fabric and how we design," according to the company's blog, which took a very when-life-gives-you-lemons-make-lemonade approach to the situation. "Your (extremely) honest feedback made this possible. Thank you!"

So, what did they do?

The pants' luon fabric—a "moisture-wicking, four-way stretch, high Lycra content, cottony-soft fabric"—hasn't changed, but the testing has. The pants now go through about 15 tests "to make sure you get great ass coverage (that’s the scientific term)," the blog said.

University scientists even developed a "sheer-o-metre" to measure "the amount of light coming through the fabric while being stretched at varying degrees," the blog said.

And, the patterns have been re-designed "in each and every style to minimize the stretching of the fabric," the blog said. "Basically, that means there’s now more fabric across the bum so it's not stretched from the get-go."

Are the new tests enough reassurance for you to purchase and wear the re-engineered luon pants? Tell us in the comments.
