U.S. Open Merchandise Pavilion Opens To The Public

With or without a ticket, people are allowed to shop at the tournament's store through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The at Congressional Country Club opened Thursday, allowing those with or without a ticket to next week's tournament to shop for souvenirs. The 36,0000 square-foot pavilion -- featuring more than 400,000 items of U.S. Open-logoed merchandise -- will remain open to the public through Sunday.

Even though it was only the first day, business was good and is only expected to get better, said Mary Lopuszynsky, senior director of U.S. Open merchandise.

“Even in the last few years when the economy hasn’t been that great we’ve still had our two best Opens merchandise-wise,” Lopuszynksy said.

Among the items sold on the first day, men’s polo shirts, hats and the U.S. Open poster, illustrated by Lee Wybranski, were the most popular, Lopuszynsky  said.

Wybranski, who has been designing the U.S. Open posters since 2008, was at the pavilion signing the posters.

“I think my work is hallmarked by a fairly traditional aesthetic,” Wybranski said. “Subject-matter-wise, the club house at the Congressional Golf Course is so spectacular that it seems we had to consider that right away. And then they just redesigned the golf course for the Open so we figured it would be a nice thing to kind of showcase that component.”

To avoid the rush of people during the tournament, she recommends all customers, even those with a ticket, shop in the days before the Open begins.

“We expect a tremendous response,” she said. “The logo is great, we’re in our nation’s capital, and the golf is great. I’m really excited.”
