Central Farm Markets Opens Largest Winter Farm Market in the Area

Bethesda Central Farm Market Opens Winter Market with over 30 vendors on Sundays at Bethesda Elementary School

Central Farm Markets announces the opening of its Winter Market, on the parking lot of Bethesda Elementary School in Bethesda on Jan. 6, 2013. The winter hours are 10 am- 1 pm.

In keeping with its mission of bringing the best in fresh foods to the community, Central Farm Markets will open the Bethesda Central Farm Market this winter with more than 30 vendors. This is the largest number of vendors that have participated and is due to the increased demand for fresh, local produce year-round.

The Bethesda Central winter market, which is held outside from January to March, is not only a place for patrons to continue shopping for local fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, fish, baked goods and dairy, but it also offers more opportunities for the local farmers to generate income on a year-round basis.

“Our winter market gives our farmers stability during the winter months and it gives our patrons an opportunity to continue to purchase these local foods that they love so much," says Mitch Berliner, co-founder of the market. “Our farmers are growing in hoop houses and eco-friendly greenhouses, which now expand their growing season. We will have  fresh local lettuces, greens, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and even some green beans this winter," Berliner says.

According to the USDA’s most recent market survey, Maryland now has more than 70 winter markets making it number 4 in the country for winter markets. The Bethesda Central Farm Market winter market is one of the largest outdoor markets.

“Due to the expanded growing seasons, our patrons can now find fresh ingredients to use in all their holiday cooking this season," says Debra Moser, the Marketing Director of Central Farm Markets. “We posted a blog with recipes for our patrons this year, with links to our vendors so they can know exactly where to buy the fresh ingredients they need. It was a huge hit.”

Bethesda Central Farm Market runs year round and the Spring market will officially open on April 13, 2013 at 9 am.

Central Farm Markets was voted "Best Farmers Market 2012" by readers of Bethesda Magazine.
