Blossom Watch: March 22

Patch spotlights a tree's transformation in the Kenwood neighborhood.

For years, Kenwood in Chevy Chase has been a destination for local cherry tree watchers away from the hustle and heat of the Tidal Basin.

The neighborhood's 1,200 Yoshino cherry trees are the same kind that draw tourists each year to Washington, D.C., and each spring, the delicate pink blossoms frame the quiet subdivision's homes and streets.

Patch is stopping by each day this week to snap photos of the same cherry tree. By the end of blooming season, we'll have a time lapse photo gallery.

Thursday, most of the Kenwood neighborhood was just past peak, though at the lunchtime hour it was still bustling with activity as photographers snapped shots and families stopped by with their kids to picnic under the trees.

Much of the ground was covered with delicate pink petals, which rained down with each small breeze.

The tree we've been spotlighting this week has taken a bit longer to bloom than its neighbors, but it was in its full glory Thursday. We've tracked the tree since it was covered with buds on Monday.

You can compare the tree's bloom today with our pre-peak photos from earlier this week.

Check back each day to watch the tree's transformation during Patch Blossom Watch, and stay tuned for a full photo gallery tomorrow of the neighborhood's beautiful blossoms.
