Why Go: Hailed as the last great Elizabethan-era composer, Thomas Tomkins was a prolific composer with a rich and complex musical language. Join Voices 21 as the group explores Tomkins' compositional style through selected madrigals and anthems that highlight his versatility in settings ranging from four to seven voices. The concert will also present some of Tomkins' music for keyboard instruments.

Why Go: The local artists from the National Capital Area Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America will display their paintings and calligraphy done in the East Asian brush-painting style. The exhibit, "Welcome Spring," is on view, daily, through March 30.

Where/When: Downtown Bethesda art galleries from 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 9.
Why Go: It's the second Friday of the month, so that means downtown Bethesda art galleries will keep their doors open late to showcase great local, regional and national artwork. Participating venues include (7740 Old Georgetown Rd.), (4862 Cordell Ave.), (7700 Wisconsin Ave., Suite E), L'Eclat de Verre (7015 Wisconsin Ave.), Upstairs Art Studios (4948 St. Elmo Ave.) and the (4600 East-West Highway).

Why Go: Four Washington, D.C. area artists will display artwork at CountDown Temporary Artspace, but the work is doomed for destruction once the temporary space leaves its Bethesda location. The short-lived work is themed around construction and destruction.
