1.

Where/When: Bethesda Avenue, Woodmont Avenue, and Elm Street on Bethesda Row in downtown Bethesda. Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11a.m. to 6p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 16 from 11a.m. to 5p.m.

Why Go: 185 artists and craftspersons from around the region and the country will sell their work this weekend as Bethesda Row transforms into an outdoor art gallery.

Where/When: Art Walk takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, at participating downtown Bethesda art galleries. The Gallery B opening reception will be held in conjunction with Art Walk at Gallery B, 7700 Wisconsin Avenue.

Why Go: During this month's Art Walk, celebrate the opening of Gallery B -- Bethesda's newest gallery operated as a community art space by the Bethesda Urban Partnership and Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District -- with an opening reception. Where/When: Meadowbrook Local Park, 7901 Meadowbrook Lane, Chevy Chase (5K run and 3K walk both start at the Candy Cane City Pavilion); Sunday, Oct. 16, 9 a.m. Register in-person at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School on Saturday, Oct. 15, from noon to 3 p.m., or at the race site on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

Why Go: Ellen's Run is an annual 5K run and 3K walk held in memory of Ellen Vala Schneider, Bethesda-Chevy Chase-area volunteer and mother of two Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School graduates, who died in February 2006. The race raises money for the B-CC High School Community Scholarship Fund, which she chaired, and the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County, where she served on the board.

Pricing: Before Oct. 16: $35 for adults, $15 for students (13-18 years old) and $10 for children (3-12 years old). On Oct. 16: $40 for adults, $20 for students and $10 for children.

 

4. Opera and Ballet cinema series at the AFI

Where/When: AFI Silver Theatre located on 8803 Colesville Rd. in Silver Spring. Saturday, Oct. 15. Start times vary. Contact theatre at 301-495-6720.

Why Go: Enjoy the Opera and Ballet cinema series at the AFI. The series highlights landmark productions from some of today’s greatest voices from the grand opera houses across Europe, as well as filmed performances of live ballets from Europe's top companies.

Pricing: AFI Opera series tickets are $20; Ballet series tickets are $15.

Where/When: Potomac Art Gallery, 10107 River Road, Potomac. Saturday, Oct. 15, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Come to the opening reception for the Potomac Art Gallery's latest show, "Canvas and Steel," and meet featured artists Carol Dyer and Richard Binder. Refreshments will be served. The Gallery show will continue through Nov. 6, 2011. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
