The library, now under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health, saw its beginnings in 1836 as the library of the U.S. Army Surgeon General in Washington, D.C. Today, NLM’s electronic information and other resources are used by millions, and the library has “changed the way scientific and medical information is organized, stored, accessed, and disseminated,” according to a news release.
