Happy Birthday, National Library of Medicine!

World's largest medical library -- located in Bethesda -- celebrates 175 years.

Bethesda’s National Library of Medicine – the world’s largest medical library– celebrates its 175th birthday in 2011.

The library, now under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health, saw its beginnings in 1836 as the library of the U.S. Army Surgeon General in Washington, D.C. Today, NLM’s electronic information and other resources are used by millions, and the library has “changed the way scientific and medical information is organized, stored, accessed, and disseminated,” according to a news release.
